e-Formula racing teams

Electric racing is a rather new experience. With electric drivetrains and, especially, batteries improving in such rapid pace, electric racing gets much more attention than ever before.

There is a large number of technical universities around the world and most feel it's their duty to have at least one formula team. The tradition, initially started with internal combustion drivetrains in 1991, had a major shift in 2010, when first fully electric formula was introduced. Both types of formulas compete in same track conditions since, against each other.

Battery technology has gotten so good and flexible, that many teams gave up their internal combustion engines and went electric. Since then, a number of performance electric formulas were developed, incorporating 4 wheel drive, advanced torque vectoring and traction control capabilities. World record of fastest accelerating car, as for summer 2016, belongs to electric formula, made by students: 0-100 km/h in 1.513 sec.

Energus Power Solutions Ltd. is taking it's share of fun developing the most energy and power-dense battery solutions for e-formula, yet fully compliant with latest 2017 FSAE safety regulations, including fire-retardant enclosures, cooling, cell-level fuses and integrated temperature sensors.

Below is a compilation of some of teams who have been supported by Energus Power Solutions and are soon going to or already had their fame in the track.

Team Swinburne (Australia)

Event: 2016-12-15, 2nd place.

When we tested the sample a few months ago we got 3.07mOhms and 19.8Ah @ 100A which was a very good result. It handled 100A with no worries for a good 12 minutes [..] It balanced out well, [..] Ran 35kW (5C) on the dyno today for a couple minutes, no problems, good temperature stability. Heaps of punch, very little voltage sag.

Wisconsin Formula Team (Wisconsin, US)

Event: 2017, 1st place in design.

[..] thank you for the support you gave to us this past year with the WR-217e electric racecar. It was great working with you and your modules ended up working very nicely for us. [..] our car really made an impression on the judges. [..] We got first place in design!

MSOE Formula Hybrid (Milwaukee, US)

Event: 2017-05-01, 2nd place.
[The battery module] was custom designed for us after much work with Sarunas at Energus. [..] [it] was measured to have a capacity of 20.83Ah at the 2C rate and a DC Internal Resistance of 2.82mΩ. That DCIR is very impressive and proves that these modules will work very well for the quick acceleration required.

Bern Formula SAE (Switzerland)

Preparing for events of 2017.

The assembly of the high-voltage battery of the season 16/17 lasted only half the time than the previous year's battery. [..] At the first full charge, the cells have been presented as very reliable and efficient, as expected - Low temperature rise at high current consumption. This has confirmed the decision to dispense with active cooling of the drive battery.
